CSS and the Design View in Many Web Editors

Article ID: KB101837

Template layouts based on CSS rather than tables are becoming very popular because of recent changes in html and xhtml standards. The reasons for these changes are chronicled elsewhere, but for a basic primer, please review this site. The problem is that most older web editing software like Frontpage 2003 and older, Adobe Dreamweaver CS2 and older, Miscrosoft Visual Studio, etc, were not designed to work well with CSS based templates in the Design View. Unfortunately at this time there is not easy fix.

Best known fixes:

First, we highly recommend that you upgrade to a web editor that was designed to work with CSS templates. At this time your best options are Microsoft Expression Web, which we have found works very well with CSS sites, Microsoft Sharepoint Designer, although Sharepoint Designer is really best used if you intend to work with Windows Sharepoint Server, MOSS, etc, and Adobe Dreamweaver CS3, which like Expression Web, works well with CSS layouts.

Your second option is to not attempt to work with your site in Design View, rather work with your site in the html or code view and preview all of your changes by first saving your file and then previewing your updates in a web browser like Internet Explorer 6.0/7.0 or Firefox.

We understand that neither of these options may be the best for you, but if you are working on a new site, we highly recommend working with the latest technologies as cross browser supported sites will become more important, and tables are just not able to perform that task well enough. CSS gives you much more control over your site and how it will appear to all users, if you build your site to current standards. It will help you greatly if you work with a web editor that was designed to keep these standards in mind.
