Themes and Cascading Style Sheets

Article ID: KB101335

In FrontPage 2002 and previous versions, Themes can be applied "with" or "without" Cascading Style Sheets. If a Theme is applied without CSS, FrontPage will automatically insert lots of <font> tags to help format the text according to the Theme. If a Theme is applied with CSS, FrontPage will generate an external style sheet and link it to the pages that use the theme. FrontPage 2003 only applies Themes with Cascading Style Sheets, in an effort to bring FrontPage web sites closer to commonly held web standards.

If a web site uses a cascading style sheet generated by a Theme, the only way to modify the style sheet is by using the Customize Theme interface to modify text styles. Web developers who are accustomed to modifying an external style sheet (.css) may find this clumsy and annoying. On the other hand, users who aren't familiar with CSS and who are more used to the typical Office functionality will find the Customize Theme interface more helpful and intuitive. My experience has been, however, that even seasoned Office users would rather learn how to edit a simple text style sheet instead of clicking away at the Style dialog box.

For Theme Developers: If you are a FrontPage Developer who creates Themes, you should think about creating a theme from scratch in FrontPage 2003 and only using the theme for graphics. Delete all the text styles in the Theme > Text > More Text Styles interface, and create an external style sheet so that users can easily modify the styles.

For Web Developers: If you use a Theme for your web site and it has cascading style sheets generated by the Theme, you're unfortunately out of luck when it comes to changing styles - you're forced to use the Modify Theme interface. The more you use it, though, the faster you'll get - so get familiar with the Style dialog window!
