Make Your Own Page Template!
Article ID: KB101550

Let's say that you have a theme package that you got from
PixelMill. The page layout allows you to add your own logo, and you
decide that you also want to change the content layout slightly --
for example, add an extra column or graphic element. You want these
changes to be applied to all your pages, but you don't want to go
through each page and make the exact same changes on each one. What
can you do?
One way is to "File/Save As" your page as a new page within your
web. Think of it as a page template that is inside of your web.
But if you will be creating many, many pages using the same
layout, or if you want to use the same layout in other webs, it may
be easier to make your own page template. Then, this layout will be
listed in your FrontPage Page Templates so that you can access the
layout any time! And you may not believe this, but making your
own page template is very, very easy!
Start with a page that is inside a web. For example, you may want
to create a new web, and open any one of the pages. Change the
layout and add any common elements that you want inside your page
template -- for example, your logo, company name, address, and phone
number, and hyperlinks to the "default" page and your contact email
address. Add tables in the main content area and format as you need
to.
When you're happy with your layout, go to "File/Save As". In the
"Save As Type" drop-down menu, choose "FrontPage template." Go ahead
and click "Save." A dialog box will pop up. For "Title," type a
title that will help you to easily identify the page template. This
is the name that shows up in your page template list. For "Name,"
type the filename of your page template. For "Description," type a
short description that will help you remember the page template -
for example, "Page template based on [theme name] with three column
layout." Then click OK. You'll be asked if you want to save embedded
files. Click OK.
Now, if you go to "File/New/Page", you should see your page
template listed there! If you need to edit your page template for
any reason, just follow the same process -- in a web, edit your page
and "File/Save As" a page template. Just replace your existing page
template. If for any reason you want to find your page template
files, they are in C:\Program Files\Microsoft
Office\Template\1033\Pages.
Save lots of time by making your own page templates!
