Getting Started with DWT Packages in a .zip download
Article ID: KB101721
You may use DWT Packages if:
- You have an existing web site based on DWTs and want to apply the DWT design.
- You have an existing web site that is not based on DWTs and want to apply the DWT design.
- You don't have a web site and want to start from scratch.
Option 1 - Existing Web Site Based on DWTs
- Download.
The download that you receive will be in .zip format.
Save the download to your computer (note the location so that you can find it!).
You will need a utility such as WinZip to extract to a folder.
After you've done this, open the folder in Windows Explorer.
- Import.
Open your existing web site in FrontPage or Expression Web.
Open Windows Explorer and browse to the download location.
Within the folder should be another folder called "yourproduct_dwt."
Drag and drop this folder and into your web's Folder List so that it is imported into your root web folder.
-
Attach the DWT.
You may attach DWTs to one page at a time (recommended for your first page to make sure it works!) or to several pages at once.
- One page: Open your web site in FrontPage 2003 or Expression Web.
Open one of the pages in Design View. Select Format > Dynamic Web Template > Attach Dynamic Web Template. Browse to the "yourproduct_dwt" folder and choose the template you want to apply. Click Open.
- Severall pages: Open your Folder List, if not already open, by going to View > Folder List. Hold down the Ctrl key and click on each file name that you want to convert. Let go of the Ctrl key when you're done. Go to Format > Dynamic Web Template > Attach Dynamic Web Template. Browse to the "yourproduct_dwt" folder and choose the template you want to apply to all of these pages. Click Open.
-
Assign Content, If Necessary.
If your web site is DWTIG-Compliant and you are applying a DWTIG-Compliant template, you will not have this step:
A pop-up screen will come up to allow you to assign content to regions.
It will list your existing regions from the "old" layout.
You will have to double-click each region and assign it to the correct region in the "new" layout.
Please see the table above for a description of the included regions. After assigning the regions, click OK. You should see the new design take effect!
- Begin Editing!
You may now open your pages and begin editing in the editable regions.
You should check the template's included readme file for specific instructions about adding your logo, changing the copyright statement, or making other changes.
Option 2: Existing Web Site Not Based on DWTs
- Prep work.
You will have to do some prep work to "strip" your pages of design elements. Please see our tutorial here for more details.
- Download.

A pop-up screen will come up to allow you to assign content to regions.
It will list your one "body" region from the old layout.
Double-click the "body" region and change the "New Region" dropdown to "body1."
Click OK. You should see the new design take effect!
- Begin Editing!
You may now open your pages and begin editing in the editable regions. You may want to move content from your body1 region into the appropriate editable regions of the new layout.
You should check the template's included readme file for specific instructions about adding your logo, changing the copyright statement, or making other changes.
Option 3a: Starting from Scratch - Starter Web Template
Your template has most likely included a starter web template. Please see our
article on creating a web site from a zipped web package.
