Adding Alt Text
Article ID: KB101109
In FrontPage, you can provide alternative text for images. This allows search
engines, text-only browsers, or people who have images "turned off" in their
browsers to be able to read about the picture.
- Right-click on an image in Normal or Design view and select Image
Properties.
- Fill out the "Alternative representation text" field in the General tab.
This text should be meaningful, like "go," "search," or "diagram of Picture
Properties dialog box."

- Click "OK."
Tips:
- If the image is purely decoration, then type a space. If the image works
as a bullet, you may type "* " as the description.
- You will want to do this for all images on your page, even invisible
"spacer" images.
- If you're not sure what to put as the alternative text, read your page
out loud from top to bottom. When you hit an image, think of how you would
read it out loud to someone who couldn't see the screen.
Behind the Scenes
When you add alt text, FrontPage adds this HTML code inside the <img> tag:
<img src="diagram.gif" alt="diagram of Picture
Properties dialog box">
When you view the page in Internet Explorer and mouse over the image, the
alternative text will pop up in a "tooltip" style box.
