The Frontpage Toolbars

Article ID: KB101581

FP 2002 | FP 2003

FrontPage 2003

You can customize your toolbar so that it holds buttons that you frequently use. In this article, we'll show you the toolbar icons that we use most frequently and also show you how to customize the toolbar.

Customize your toolbar...

Go to Tools > Customize. You can now drag icons off your toolbars if you want to get rid of them, or go through the various commands and drag them into your toolbars.

Below is a discussion of the various toolbar commands that we find most useful.

New page, folder, web, or more.
If you click once on the icon, a new blank page will be created. If you click on the arrow, you can select from creating a new web, folder, or other options.

Open.
Clicking on the button allows you to open an existing file. If you click on the arrow, you can choose to open a web folder.

Save.
This button saves your page.

Find.
This button brings up a window that lets you search for text in your webpage. There are also tabs for Replacing text or finding HTML tags. Replace is a useful command if you want to replace a misspelled word or phrase that shows up multiple times in your web page -- or even your whole web site!

Publish web.
This icon allows you to quickly go to the Publish Web dialog.

Preview in browser.
This button allows you to preview your page in a browser. This is a VERY important button!

Cut.
This button "cuts" your selected content out of the page and stores it in your computer's memory so that you can paste it in a different area in the page. (While this button is useful, we actually prefer to use the keyboard short cut Ctrl-X. You can also click and hold on your selected objects and drag them to the place you want to move them to.)

Copy.
This button "copies" your selected content and stores it in your computer's memory so that you can paste it in a different area in the page. (As with "Cut," we like to use the keyboard shortcut Ctrl-C.)

Paste.
After cutting or copying your content, you can use this command to put your content into a different area of the page. (Keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-V.)

Undo.
Very useful command (keyboard shortcut is Ctrl-Z) if you've made a mistake! Clicking on the icon will take you back one step. Clicking on the arrow will actually show you a list of commands that you've made and allow you to "step back" as many steps as you want.

Insert Table.
This is a quick short-cut for inserting a table on your page (where your cursor is). If you go to Table > Insert > Table, you will have more control over the specific aspects of your table, but this is a quicker way to get a table on your page.

Insert Picture from file.
This quickly brings you to the "insert picture from file" dialog box.

Insert Hyperlink.
This brings you to the "insert hyperlink" dialog box.

Refresh.
This is useful if you've imported files or replaced files. You can also refresh your folder list or navigation view, because sometimes FrontPage will not display the changes you've made.

Stop.
This is useful if you're working live off your server, and something is taking too long.

Standard toolbar.
The many features of this toolbar are described above.

Formatting toolbar.
Many useful tools and shortcuts are on this toolbar for font and paragraph formatting.
