Question: Who owns the images in a template?

Answer: The answer depends on where the image came from.

• Images from a stock image company: The stock image company or the original creator of the image retain copyright of all images. The developer of the template has obtained a license allowing them to use the image in a template, but neither you nor the developer actually "owns" the image. It is also likely that the developer has the license to use the image in a template, but you may not have the license to use the image in other formats (such as in a marketing brochure). You should refer to the EULA of the developer or contact the developer to get more information.
• Images created by the developer of a template: These may include sample images, button graphics, icons, etc., that come with the template. In this case, the image falls under the same license as the template. The developer owns the image, but is allowing you to use the image, and probably any "derivative," in your web site (derivatives would include any modifications you make to the image). You will most likely not be able to use the image in any other format unless you first contact the developer.
