INTRO | New Year, Opportunities, Success

Whew!....This year has started off with a bang. Historically traffic slows from mid-December to mid-January. This year it appears there is no hesitation by customers to get their projects started. It seems everyone is ready for the New Year, New Opportunities, and New Success!

Don't they say that challenges are nothing more than opportunities in disguise? Well, I agree with them. Plus, I would add that those hidden opportunities generate new challenges that when overcome result in success. Now, let's see if we can make that come true.

PixelMill is fortunate to have a number of existing and brewing opportunities that will allow us to deliver new and compelling products and support materials that should help you overcome those opportunity-created challenges in your own business. Stay tuned as the coming months will bring new announcements about these new products and solutions.

All these big words and new, new, new....make me sounds like a dot-com hype machine. I'll back-off now and get to the nuts and bolts of this newsletter. This month, we feature an article that looks at the difference between fixed width and fluid sites. This seems to be one of the most popular requests we receive from customers. Each has their own personal preference on which is better. Personally, I think the best option is the one that best meets your customer's needs. That's often a tough question. We also introduce you to a valuable collection of Presentation Templates for PowerPoint. These are fresh off the presses from our leading PowerPoint product developer team. Plus, you can use any of them and convert them to Flash for easy web viewing, by using PowerCONVERTER with our 10% discount under our Special Offers in the right column.

Don't miss our new blogs summarized in the right column. Our blogs are a growing source of resources and may often be the first place we announce new products, solutions, and opportunities. Use our syndication feeds to stay informed of updates.

PixelMill wishes you the best for 2006, and many New Opportunities and New Successes.

FEATURE | Fixed Width or Liquid Sites?

When developing a web site, one of the initial considerations is whether to use a fixed-width layout or a liquid layout.

Fixed-width layouts, as the term suggests, are sites where the main content area of the layout and design has a static pixel width. One example of a fixed-width site is www.redenvelope.com. While the content area does remain in the center of the browser window when the browser window is resized, the actual width of the content area does not change.

Liquid layouts describe sites where the entire layout of the site stretches or shrinks to fill the entire browser window when the browser window is resized. One example of a liquid site is www.amazon.com. While the left and right columns have the same width, the center content area resizes and flexes according to the width of the browser window.

What does dynamic Flash mean?

Some templates come with dynamic Flash movies, which means that one or more of the movie elements are dynamically loaded from "outside" the movie.

For example, a movie may load an external .jpg, or use an external text file to define the text. These dynamic Flash movies make it easier for the end-user to modify the images, text, links, or other variables without needing to use the Flash program. See our knowledgebase article about questions related to dynamic Flash products.

What is CSS-based layout?

Some templates use table-based layout, which is where the designer uses a system of table cells to achieve the layout of a page. Some other templates use CSS-based layout, which is where the designer defines the layout through a CSS file.

CSS-based layout allows the separation of the content (your text, data tables, and images) from the structure (the design and layout), which provides cleaner code for search engines to crawl. Most CSS-based layouts put the layout information in an external cascading style sheet file (.css), which then also means that if you want to make changes, you can do it in one place without having to modify each and every page individually. CSS-based layouts take advantage of the latest technology and recommendations of the World Wide Web Consortium.
