Add Google Site Search to your Website Project

Article ID: KB101843

Add in Site Search and More to Your Web Projects

Most Web sites and Blogs can make very good use of in-site search and in the past it has not been easy or inexpensive to deploy. Well.. a great solution is at hand! in October of 2006 Google launched the Google Co-op Customizable Search Engine and there's no programming knowledge or cost involved.

You can select just your site for the search and or a specific list of sites to suit your visitors convenience. Check out this example of Google custom Search that Intuit built: http://jumpup.intuit.com/

Roll your own:

1) Go to http://www.google.com/coop/cse/ and log in to the control panel with your Gmail credentials

2) Fill out the Basic information, keywords, language and list the site and or sites you want the Googlebot to index. Also, you can choose to make some money by running  Google Advertising on your results page. Google provides you with a free homepage for your search engine with the name, description, overview, search box profile picture and a list of collaborators.

3) Log in to Your "My search engines page" by clicking on manage your existing search engines. In addition to the Control Panel and Statistics you can Create More search Engines use the Google Marker  to add sites to your Custom Search Engine and you can add the Developer Gadget to your iGoogle page.

4) You can link to your hosted Google Search Homepage or proceed to add the search to your site. Google hosts a homepage for your Custom Search Engine as soon as you create it. In addition, you can also host a search box and the search results for your Custom Search Engine on your own website. Go to your new Google Custom search Home page and select the "Code" tab in your search engine's control panel to get the code for these features. You just pick your options and copy the code for the search box and paste it into your web site. You can choose to have Google host the results page (Search box code for your website) or have the results appear in your web site (Search box and search results code for your website). To see the instructions for this go to http://www.google.com/coop/docs/cse/hosting.html

The simple search box code that you would paste into your Web site looks like this:

<!-- Google CSE Search Box Begins -->
<form id="searchbox_013991622106925830709:qlusjce5bvq" action="http://www.google.com/cse">
<input type="hidden" name="cx" value="013991622106925830709:qlusjce5bvq" />
<input type="hidden" name="cof" value="FORID:0" />
<input name="q" type="text" size="40" />
<input type="submit" name="sa" value="Search" />
<img src="http://www.google.com/coop/images/google_custom_search_smnar.gif" alt="Google Custom Search" />
</form>
<!-- Google CSE Search Box Ends -->

Please try the Google Custom Search I built.  Keep in mind that this is the hosted search page and that I can go to the control panel and then copy the code and paste it to place the search box on any Web site as well as have the results show up on any page in my site and that I can choose to get paid for displaying Google advertising.

See:  http://www.google.com/coop/cse?cx=013991622106925830709%3Aqlusjce5bvq

I think you will find that this is a very powerful tool and one that can be easily deployed in conjunction with any of the PixelMill Templates
